Dr. Paul Gates Lecture, March 22nd

Dr. Paul Gates gave our class a very interesting talk on privacy in the modern age. Given his background of law, he was a great person to The main piece of info that stuck out to me is that privacy doesn’t really exist anymore. Whether is is through census data, purchasing habits, or even through social media, you are basically always being tracked by some entity. This may seem unnerving, but it is simply a sign of the times. As long as you are connected to the Internet, which today is almost impossible to avoid, you are vulnerable to being tracked.

Dr. Gates discussed many different facets of cyber security, but the one that I stood out to me dealt with the San Bernandino shooting. Even though there was significant evidence on the shooter’s iPhone, Apple was very hesitant to release his records. This is because all other iPhone users would get an insecure feeling about purchasing Apple products, which would in turn affect the sales of said iPhone. Security is something that is scarce in today’s society, and even though Apple had to eventually concede to the FBI, they did not compromise the integrity of their phones, and the security they are supposed to provide to the people.

Another relevant topic that he spoke about was trolling. He further elaborated by stating that the invention of the Internet, along with the lack of regulation, has allowed for trolls to exist. The lack of physical proximity provides trolls with a space to act almost anonymously. In today’s age of “fake news”, one must take into account the act of trolling, and realize that it is largely contributing to the skepticism in the media.

When looking at sports betting, it is vital to acknowledge that there is no one true opinion that holds more weight than the others. There is plenty of information present online that is designed to give you the edge when is comes to betting on a given sporting event. When it’s all said and done, the opinion that matters most is your own; this piece of advice translates to others parts of your life as well. Even though your ideas may not always be the best, it is important to learn to rely on your own knowledge and experiences.
